Abstract

MORPHOLOGICAL CHANGES OF THE LEFT ATRIUM IN PATIENTS WHO HAVE MAZE PROCEDURE COMBINED WITH MITRAL VALVE REPAIR OR BIOLOGICAL MITRAL VALVE REPLACEMENT

Objective: Evaluate the changes in left atrial morphology in patients undergoing Maze procedure using radiofrequency energy combined with mitral valve repair or biological mitral valve replacement.

Subjects and methods: This was non-controlled retrospective and prospective study, describing a series of cases.

Results: There were 95 patients, the mean of age was 62.3 ± 8.3 years. Men accounted for 52.6%. Palpitation was presented in 44.2% of cases. The postoperative rate of freedom from AF at first month, 3rd month, 6th month, 12th month and the end of the study was 82.9%, 73.4%, 76.6%, 84.8%, 82.9% and 72.6%, respectively. The left atrial volume index gradually decreased until the 12th month and then began to increase again. The atrial fibrillation group had a statistically larger left atrial volume index at every time points, excepted for 12th month, than the group without atrial fibrillation.

Conclusion: The reduction in left atrial size was a favorable predictor for sinus rhythm restoration after Maze procedure in patients undergoing mitral valve repair or biological mitral valve replacement.
