PREVALENCE OF STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS COLONIZATION IN PATIENTS UNDERGOING JOINT ARTHROPLASTY AT VINMEC TIMES CITY HOSPITAL AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS

Abstract

Objectives: To describe the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus (SA) colonization in  patients  undergoing  joint  arthroplasty  and  to  identify  associated  factors. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive, analytical study was conducted on 337 patients undergoing joint arthroplasty and preoperative SA screening at Vinmec Times City Hospital from June 2022 to December 2024. Results: A total of 337 patients had preoperative nasal swab screening. The proportions of patients colonized with MRSA (methicillin-resistant SA) and MSSA (methicillin-susceptible SA) were 10.1% (34/337) and 0.6% (2/337), respectively. In univariate analysis, SA colonization was associated with age ≤ 25 years (p = 0.003), bone cancer diagnosis (p = 0.007), infection at admission (p = 0.018), and antibiotic use within 3 months prior to admission (p = 0.019). Multivariate analysis showed that infection at admission remained independently associated with SA colonization (p = 0.009, OR = 9.84, 95%CI: 1.73 - 54.29). Conclusion: The rate of MRSA colonization (10.1%) was higher than that of MSSA (0.6%). Infection at admission was identified as a risk factor associated with the prevalence of SA colonization.
