THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN CAROTID INTIMA-MEDIA THICKNESS AND CORONARY ARTERY LESIONS IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objectives:To evaluate the association between carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and the severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients with chronic coronary syndrome (CCS). Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 160 patients with CCS who underwent coronary angiography and bilateral carotid ultrasonography for CIMT assessment at Duc Giang General Hospital between March 2019 and March 2023. Patients were stratified into two groups: Increased CIMT (≥ 0.9mm) and normal CIMT (< 0.9mm). Results: The prevalence of increased CIMT was 55%. The increased-CIMT group had a significantly lower left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) than the normal-CIMT group (68.7 ± 10.6% vs. 73.5 ± 8.5%, respectively; p = 0.002). Patients with increased CIMT had a higher prevalence of multivessel CAD involving ≥ 2 coronary vessels (63.6% vs. 47.2%; p = 0.04), a higher mean SYNTAX score (18.85 ± 13.62 vs. 13.62 ± 10.86; p = 0.007), and a higher mean Gensini score (44.66 ± 42.40 vs. 29.92 ± 30.14; p = 0.030) than those with normal CIMT. Conclusion: Increased CIMT is associated with greater CAD severity, including multivessel coronary involvement and higher SYNTAX and Gensini scores.
