Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the results of ultrasound-guided percutaneous gallbladder drainage for the treatment of acute cholecystitis due to gallstones. Methods: A retrospective and prospective, descriptive study was conducted on 78 patients with acute cholecystitis due to gallstones who underwent percutaneous ultrasound-guided cholecystectomy at Military Hospital 103 from January 1^st, 2021, to June 30^th, 2025. Results: Local anesthesia combined with systemic analgesia was 78.2%; the drainage site in the 7^th intercostal space along the anterior axillary line was 51.3%. The drainage device by a catheter was 74.4%, and by a pigtail was 25.6%. The average drainage time was 23.1 minutes. There were no major adverse events during the procedure; complications due to drainage slippage occurred in 5.1%. The drainage results: Good was 93.6%; average was 5.1%; and poor was 1.3%. Conclusion: Ultrasound-guided percutaneous cholecystectomy for the treatment of acute cholecystitis is safe, has no major adverse events, and has an acceptable complication rate. It should be performed in patients with severe cholecystitis, advanced age, and high risk factors where emergency cholecystectomy is difficult.
