ASSOCIATION BETWEEN TISSUE EOSINOPHILIA AND SOME CHARACTERISTICS IN CHRONIC OTITIS MEDIA

Abstract
Objectives: To analyze the association between tissue eosinophilia in the middle ear mucosa and selected clinical and paraclinical characteristics in chronic otitis media (COM). Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 31 patients diagnosed with COM who underwent surgical treatment at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Military Hospital 103, from August 2025 to March 2026. Results: The eosinophilia group showed a tendency toward a higher risk of tympanic membrane retraction, increased rates of yellow/green otorrhea, middle ear polyp, and scutum erosion on computed tomography (CT) compared to the non-eosinophilia group; however, these differences were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). The eosinophilia group had a 7.50-fold higher likelihood of middle ear opacification on CT and demonstrated significantly greater hearing loss, with mean pure-tone averages of 44.78 ± 3.06dB versus 36.92 ± 2.16dB in the non-eosinophilia group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Patients with eosinophilic of the middle ear mucosa showed a tendency toward tympanic membrane retraction, middle ear cavity involvement, and scutum erosion on CT, along with more severe hearing loss compared to the non-eosinophilic group in patients with COM.
