EVALUATION OF IMMUNOCHEMICAL FECAL OCCULT BLOOD TESTING IN INDIVIDUALS AGED 40 AND ABOVE IN FIVE NORTHERN PROVINCES OF VIETNAM IN 2023

Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence of positive immunochemical fecal occult blood testing (FIT) results and associated factors among individuals aged 40 and above in 2023. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study with analysis was conducted on 5040 individuals aged 40 and above in five northern provinces of Vietnam from 5/2021 to 12/2023. Results: The prevalence of positive FIT test results ranged from 4.13% to 8.65% across different regions, with an overall prevalence of 6.2%. Males had a significantly higher prevalence of positive FIT results as compared to females (p<0.05). The highest prevalence of positive FIT results by age group was observed in the 70-80 years age group (8.58%) and the 60-69 years age group (7.77%) (p<0.05). Participants with alcohol consumption habits, a history of stroke, previous detection of gastrointestinal polyps, or symptoms such as rectal bleeding, mucous discharge, or unexplained weight loss, had a higher prevalence of positive FIT results compared to those without these factors (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The positive fecal immunochemical test (FIT) rate in the community is 6.2%. Male individuals with a history of gastrointestinal polyps, a habit of alcohol consumption, unexplained weight loss or the presence of adenomas or polyps have a higher risk of a positive FIT result (p<0.05)
