Abstract

Objectives: Describe the characteristics of vessels and the value of multi-detector row CT in evaluating renal vessels in living donors at Hue Central Hospital.

Methods: A cross-sectional study on 122 living donors were examined with MDCT and nephrectomy at Hue Central Hospital. CTA and surgical findings were quantified with weighted Kappa statistics.

Results: According to CTA findings, 77.87% (87.30%) had a single renal artery (vein), 19.67% (11.86%) had double renal arteries (veins), 2.46%. (0.82%) had triple renal arteries (veins). The percentage of accessory renal arteries and early branching of a renal arteries were 22.13%, 32,79%, respectively. The frequency of right renal vein variations was significantly higher than that of left renal vein variations. The most common anatomical variation on the right is multiple veins. The specificity, sensitivity for detecting artery (vein) in MDCT were 93-100% (83-100%), 96-100% (92-100%), Kappa 0.66-0.88 (Kappa 0.86-1.00), p<0.001 (p<0.001), respectively.

Conclusion: Transplantation remains the best option for patients with end-stage renal disease. MDCT currently is the preferred and gold standard imaging modality despite renal arterial and venous system as well as variants before renal transplantation, to minimize intra-and post-operation complications and ensure successfully renal transplantation.
