Abstract

Background: Organ-tissue transplantation is the best alternative treatment method for patients with end-stage of organ failure. Who is the donor? How to get the good quality of tissue-organ donation for transplantation? Who will receive organ-tissue donated for transplantation? The aim of our study was to review the organ-tissue donation and transplantation program at Cho Ray Hospital.

Research methods: A retrospective, descriptive case series study of deceased organ donation (brain death or cardiac death), that was conducted at Cho Ray Hospital from 2008-2023.

Results and discussion: From 2008-2023, The Allocation Unit of Cho Ray Hospital have been received the information of 186 potential donors with brain death (BD) or cardiac death (CD) from the ICU departments inside or outside of Cho Ray Hospital and directly from donors' families. It was included 151/186 (81.18%) men and 35/186 (18.82%) women. The average age was 38.66±15.53 yo (15;84 yo). But we only received 47 cases (31 cases of BD; 16 cases of CD). Including 35/47 (74.47%) men and 12/47 (25.53%) women. The average age was 43.11±15.84 (18;71 yo). There are many reasons to refuse the donation, but within the scope of this article, we only mention the medical causes, its were including: 13/186pts (6.99%) infection; organs damaged due to underlying disease 1/186pts (0.54%); Pre-hospital cardiac arrest 2/186pts (1.08%); Metastatic cancer 2/186pts (1.08%). The number of organs received: 71 kidneys, 12 livers, 13 hearts; 50 corneas, 2 cases of skin donation. The transplantation results were good, except for 2/71 (2.82%) kidney transplantation cases of death in the postoperative period due to peritonitis.

Conclusion: The shortage of organs donation is a major pressing issue in the community. But achieving the success of an organ transplantation requires a series of coordination closely between many different specialties in screening and evaluating the quality of organ-tissue donation.
