Abstract

Objective: This study aims to evaluate local and systemic responses to ZK60 Mg alloy implanted on rabbit thigh muscles. Subjects and methods: 48 white rabbits, randomly divided into 3 groups (each group has 16 rabbits). Rabbits were implanted with or without hydroxyapatite (HA)-coated Mg ZK60 discs or Titanium discs into the rabbit thigh muscle. We assessed changes in weight, local and systemic temperature and histological images after 6 months. Results: The rabbit's weight increased statistically significantly compared to before treatment from the 2nd to the 6th month after surgery. Local temperature increased statistically significantly on the 3rd day after surgery, then decreased to normal. Histological images showed no inflammatory lesions, only cystic lesions and material deposition in the group implanted with Mg ZK60 discs. Conclusion: Mg ZK60 discs as well as Titanium discs do not cause local or systemic adverse reactions in experimental animals.
