GENERAL ANESTHESIA FOR A PATIENT WITH WOLFF-PARKINSON-WHITE SYNDROME AND HYPERTENSION UNDERGOING LAPAROSCOPIC APPENDECTOMY
Main Article Content
Abstract
Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, an electrophysiological cardiac condition caused by premature stimulation of the abnormal accessory pathway, may have asymptomatic or only clinical manifestations such as palpitations or dyspnea on exertion. We report a case of a 66-year-old female patient with a history of hypertension. Her Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome was accidentally discovered on an electrocardiogram when having an indication for a laparoscopic appendectomy under general anesthesia without clinical manifestations of this syndrome. The anesthetic management of these patients is challenging because they are susceptible to life-threatening tachyarrhythmias. Taking all necessary precautions to prevent tachycardia, balanced anesthesia, strict monitoring, and being prepared with the necessary drugs and equipment to treat any complications are the basis for positive results.
