Abstract

Objectives: To determine the cardioprotective effects of S-propargyl-cysteine (SPRC) in rats induced acute myocardial infarction. Methods: Myocardial infarction (MI) was induced in rats by ligating the left anterior descending coronary artery. The concentrations of creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and TTC (2, 3, 5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride) staining were used to evaluate the cardioprotective effects of SPRC. The levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were used to determine the antioxidant mechanism of SPRC. Results: Preventive treatment with SPRC significantly reduced infarct size, CK, and LDH leakage. SPRC displayed antioxidant properties by preserving SOD and CAT levels while reducing MDA levels. Conclusion: SPRC demonstrated protective effects against MI via an antioxidant mechanism, and its cardioprotective impact was comparable to Captoril.
