STUDY ON THE ACUTE AND SUB-CHRONIC TOXICITY OF BLACK SHALLOT DRY EXTRACT

Abstract

Objectives: To investigate the acute and subchronic toxicity of black shallot dry extract. Methods: The acute toxicity of black shallot was determined on Swiss mice according to Litchfield - Wilcoxon’s method. The subchronic toxicity of black shallot was investigated on New Zealand White rabbits with the doses of 375 mg/kg/day and 750 mg/kg/day using biochemical, hematology test, and histopathology. Results: We had not found the maximum oral dose of LD50 of black shallot dry extract. At the highest oral single dose of 3000 mg/kg, black shallot dry extract was not toxic to experimental mice. At dosage of 375 mg/kg/day and 750 mg/kg/day, black shallot dry extract did not affect the general condition and body weight of experimental rabbits. We did not find any significant change in the amount of red and white blood cells, hematoglobin, concentration of AST, ALT, creatinine, and urea between the control group and thetreated group. On histopathologic images, there was no difference in the colour, morphology of liver, renal, and spleen between the control group and the treated group. Conclusion: Black shallot dry extract was not acute toxic at the highest oral dose of 3000 mg/kg in mice and not subchronic toxic at dose of 375 mg/kg/day and 750 mg/kg/day during 28 days.
