Main Article Content
Abstract
Objectives: To describe the characteristics of depression in elderly osteoporosis patients treated at the National Geriatrics Hospital and to explore the relationship between depression and fracture history. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out on 285 osteoporosis patients aged ≥ 60 years, examined and treated at the National Geriatric Hospital from September 2021 to September 2022. The Patient Health Questionaire (PHQ-9) scale was used to assess depression. Face-to-face interviews were conducted using available questionnaires. Results: The rate of depression was 53.7%. The majority of patients with mild depression accounted for 30.8%, and moderate level accounted for 12.3%. Severe and very severe depression both accounted for 5.3%. Among the symptoms of depression on the PHQ-9 scale, the most common symptoms were: “Feeling tired or lack of energy” (65.6%) and “Difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep” sleep, or sleep too much” (60.0%). No association was found between fracture history and depression. Conclusion: The percentage of elderly osteoporosis patients assessed depression according to the PHQ-9 scale was quite high. Routine screening for depression in elderly osteoporosis patients in general and community health settings is required for early detection and treatment of patients.
