Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the antitussive and expectorant effects of the traditional herbal formula Thanh Kim Hoa Dom Thang (TKHĐT) in experimental models. Subjects and methods: A controlled experimental study was conducted on 80 Swiss albino mice (18–20 g). The antitussive effect was evaluated using an ammonia-induced cough model with four groups (n = 10): control, codeine phosphate (20 mg/kg), TKHĐT (24.0 g/kg), and TKHĐT (48.0 g/kg). The number of cough episodes was recorded during a 5-minute observation period before and 60 minutes after treatment. The expectorant effect was assessed using the modified Engler and Szelenyi method with four corresponding groups by determining the concentration of phenol red in tracheal lavage fluid. Results: TKHĐT at both doses significantly reduced the number of cough episodes by 33.09–40.32% compared with pretreatment values and by 35.47–39.57% compared with the control group (p < 0.01). In addition, TKHĐT significantly increased the concentration of phenol red in tracheal lavage fluid by 29.63–37.04% compared with the control group (p < 0.01). No statistically significant differences were observed between the two TKHĐT doses or between the TKHĐT-treated groups and the positive control groups (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Thanh Kim Hoa Dom Thang exhibited significant antitussive and expectorant activities in experimental models, with efficacy that was not statistically different from that of codeine phosphate and sodium benzoate in the respective experimental models.
