Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the gastroprotective effect of VH Gastric Powder on an experimental gastric ulcer model induced by aspirin combined with pyloric ligation in Wistar rats. Methods: This was an in vivo experimental study design. Fifty Wistar rats were randomly assigned to five groups (n = 10 per group): Group 1 (normal control); Group 2 (ulcer model); Group 3 (omeprazole 20 mg/kg/day); Group 4 (VH Gastric Powder at doses of 4.8 g/kg/day) and Group 5 (VH Gastric Powder, 9.6 g/kg/day). Gastric ulcers were induced by oral administration of aspirin (200 mg/kg) combined with pyloric ligation. Gastric juice volume, pH, free acidity, total acidity, ulcer index, and gross and histopathological changes of the gastric mucosa were evaluated. Results: At both dose levels, VH Gastric Powder significantly reduced gastric juice volume, free acidity, and total acidity, increased gastric juice pH, and decreased the ulcer index by 24.18% and 36.30%, respectively, compared with the ulcer model group (Group 2) (p < 0.05). In addition, the treatment markedly improved both gross and histopathological gastric mucosal lesions. No statistically significant differences were observed between the VH Gastric Powder-treated groups and the omeprazole group (p > 0.05). Conclusion: VH Gastric Powder exhibited significant gastroprotective effects against aspirin- and pyloric ligation-induced gastric ulcers in Wistar rats.
