Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the growth-inhibitory activity of a 6-shogaol (6-SHO)-enriched  ginger  liquid  extract  against  the  A549  human  lung  cancer  cell line. Methods: This was an in vitro experimental study design. The growth-inhibitory and apoptosis-inducing effects of the 6-SHO-enriched ginger extract on A549 cells were assessed using the MTT assay and a flow-cytometry apoptosis assay, in comparison with a non-enriched conventional ginger extract, at 24, 48 and 72 hours. Results: The 6-SHO-enriched extract strongly inhibited A549 proliferation, with IC₅₀ values of 45.43, 34.41 and 27.06 µg/mL at 24, 48 and 72 hours, respectively - 4.57 to 6.26 times lower than those of the non-enriched extract. The proportion of apoptotic cells increased in a concentration- and time-dependent manner and was highest at 72 hours, reaching 64.63% at 80 µg/mL. Conclusion: The 6-SHO-enriched ginger extract exerts potent growth-inhibitory activity against A549 lung carcinoma cells, markedly stronger than the non-enriched extract, indicating its potential for cancer treatment.
