ASSESSMENT OF CHANGES IN LIVER FUNCTION FOLLOWING TRANSARTERIAL CHEMOEMBOLIZATION IN PATIENTS WITH HEPATOCELLULAR CARCINOMA

Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate changes in liver function after transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and to analyze associated factors in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study with longitudinal follow-up was conducted on 81 patients with HCC who underwent TACE at Military Hospital 103 from April 2024 to April 2026. Liver function parameters (AST, ALT, bilirubin, albumin, INR), as well as Child-Pugh and ALBI scores, were assessed before treatment and at 1 month post-TACE. The associations between changes in liver function and clinical as well as paraclinical factors were analyzed. Results: At 1 month after treatment, liver enzyme and bilirubin levels increased significantly, while albumin levels decreased compared to baseline (p < 0.05). A considerable proportion of patients experienced deterioration in liver function, defined as an increase of ≥ 1 point in the Child-Pugh score. Changes in liver function were associated with tumor burden, disease stage, and selected baseline biochemical parameters. Conclusion: TACE significantly impacts liver function in the early post-treatment period. Assessment of liver function after TACE is crucial for prognosis and for guiding subsequent treatment strategies.
