BRANCHING ANATOMY OF THE FEMORAL ARTERY IN RABBITS: FROM MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS TO EXPERIMENTAL APPLICATIONS

Abstract
Objectives: To describe the branching patterns, diameters, and branching origins of the femoral artery in rabbits and their applications in experimental surgery. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study was conducted on 32 thigh specimens from 16 unembalmed rabbit cadavers with the vascular lumens injected with latex. Anatomical dissection and anatomical measurements were performed at the Department of Anatomy, Vietnam Military Medical University, from March to May 2026. Results: The rabbit femoral artery exhibited multiple branches with varying frequencies. The saphenous artery (SA) was present in 100% of cases. The lateral circumflex femoral artery (LCFA) and the superficial caudal epigastric artery (SCEA) were observed in 96.88% of cases. The deep femoral artery (DFA) and the descending genicular artery (DGA) were present in 90.63%. The LCFA had the largest mean diameter (0.878 ± 0.277mm). A statistically significant difference in diameter was observed bilaterally for the pudendoepigastric trunk (PET); p < 0.05. Conclusion: The rabbit femoral artery demonstrates a diverse branching pattern. Several branches have high potential value for experimental applications.
