Abstract

Objectives: To identify factors associated with the quality of life (QoL) in elderly patients with chronic pain. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study with a control group was conducted on 240 elderly patients aged ≥ 60 years and 188  patients aged < 60 years with chronic pain who were treated at Military Hospital 103from August 2025 to April 2026. QoL was assessed using the SF-36 questionnaire. Results: The total SF-36 score in the elderly group was significantly lower than that in the group aged < 60 years. Most elderly patients had a moderate level of QoL, accounting for 93.75%. The most markedly impaired domains included physical functioning, role limitations due to physical health, bodily pain, general health, and social functioning. Multivariate analysis showed that pain intensity, electric shock-like pain, and anxiety disorder were significantly associated with QoL. Conclusion: Chronic pain reduces QoL in elderly patients, particularly in those with severe pain, neuropathic pain characteristics, and comorbid anxiety.
