ASSESSMENT OF HAND HYGIENE KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE AMONG INTERNAL MEDICINE NURSES AT MILITARY HOSPITAL 103 IN 2025

Abstract
Objectives: To assess hand hygiene knowledge, practice, and related factors among internal medicine nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 279 internal medicine nurses at Military Hospital 103 from October 2024 until the end of September 2025. A total of 3,768 hand hygiene opportunities were observed based on the WHO “Five Moments for Hand Hygiene” model. Knowledge was assessed using a standardized questionnaire. Results: The mean knowledge score was 20.82 ± 4.16/30. Most nurses had moderate knowledge (50.5%). The overall hand hygiene compliance rate was 85.1% (95%CI: 84.0 - 86.2). The quality of practice was suboptimal, with only 36.4% performed with correct technique and 44.2% meeting the recommended duration. Compliance varied across hand hygiene moments, being highest after exposure to body fluids (96.4%) and lowest after contact with patient surroundings (62.2%). Variations were also observed across clinical departments. Conclusion: The compliance rate with hand hygiene indications reached 85.1%; however, the quality of hand hygiene practice remained suboptimal (correct technique: 36.4%; adequate duration: 44.2%). The mean knowledge score was 20.82 ± 4.16/30 points, with 21.5% of participants demonstrating poor knowledge levels. These findings highlight the need for enhanced monitoring, improvement of hand hygiene techniques and knowledge for nurses.
