EFFECTIVENESS OF BLOOD FLOW RESTRICTION TRAINING ON MUSCLE STRENGTH AND PHYSICAL FUNCTION IN OLDER ADULTS

Abstract

Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of blood flow restriction training (BFRT) in enhancing muscle strength and physical function among older adults. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus for studies published between 2020 and 2026. Eligible studies included older adults undergoing blood flow restriction training and reporting outcomes related to muscle strength or physical function. A total of 8 studies were included and qualitatively synthesized. Results: Blood flow restriction training consistently improved muscle strength.  However, its effects on physical function were more variable and appeared to depend on participant characteristics and intervention modalities. Combined approaches, particularly those incorporating functional training or whole-body vibration, demonstrated more comprehensive benefits. Conclusion: Blood flow restriction training is an effective and clinically relevant intervention for improving muscle function in older adults, especially for individuals who are unable to perform high-intensity exercise.
