PLASMA MICRORNA-132 EXPRESSION LEVELS IN PATIENTS WITH DEPRESSIVE DISORDER

Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic value of plasma microRNA-132 (miR-132) expression levels in patients depressive disorder. Methods: A prospective, cross-sectional descriptive, study was conducted on 60 adult patients with depressive disorder and 60 healthy controls. The expression level of miR-132 was quantified using digital Polymerase Chain Reaction (dPCR). Results: Patients’ age ranged from 18 - 60 years. The median expression level of miR-132 in the depression group was significantly higher than that in the control group (0.336 copies/µL vs. 0.144 copies/µL; p < 0.001). The depression group showed greater variability with the presence of unusually high values, whereas the control group demonstrated less dispersion. The expression level of miR-132 showed good diagnostic value for depression (AUC = 0.72), with a sensitivity of 83.33%, a specificity of 58.33%, and a cut-off value of 0.192 copies/µL. In patients with moderate and severe depression (according to ICD-10), corresponding to stages moderate and severe (according to ICD-10), the expression level of serum miR-132 was significantly higher than that in the control group (p < 0.01). Conclusion: The expression level of miR-132 shows fair diagnostic value for depression.
