SURVEY OF THE BODY ROUNDNESS INDEX IN PATIENTS WITH NEWLY DIAGNOSED TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS AT MILITARY HOSPITAL 103

Abstract
Objectives: To assess the body roundness index (BRI) and its association with traditional anthropometric indices in patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: A cross-sectional, comparative, controlled study was conducted on 207 participants, including 107 patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus and 100 healthy controls at Military Hospital 103 from June to December 2025. Results: The BRI was significantly higher in the diabetes group than in the control group (4.25 vs. 3.80; p < 0.001). BRI showed strong correlations with waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and a moderate correlation with body mass index (BMI). The difference in BRI between the two groups was most pronounced among individuals with BMI < 23 kg/m² and those without central obesity defined by WC. The diabetes group exhibited significantly higher BRI than the control group in the < 60 age group and across both sexes. Conclusion: The BRI was strongly associated with anthropometric indices, reflecting central obesity and was significantly higher in patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes compared with healthy individuals, particularly among those without evident obesity according to traditional anthropometric indices.
