CHARACTERISTICS AND FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH ACINETOBACTER BAUMANNII INFECTION IN SEVERE BURN PATIENTS

Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate the characteristics of Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) infection and related factors in patients with severe burns. Methods: A prospective, cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 46 patients with severe burns treated at the Intensive Care Unit, Le Huu Trac National Burn Hospital in 2023. Results: A. baumannii was the leading cause of sepsis in severe burn patients (blood isolates: 40.74%; wound isolates: 50.00%), with a multidrug resistance rate of 100%. The median procalcitonin level in the A. baumannii group was 3.61 ng/mL, significantly lower than in patients with sepsis due to other bacteria (p < 0.01). Each 1 ng/mL decrease in procalcitonin and each 1 mmol/L decrease in serum sodium increased the likelihood of A. baumannii sepsis by 1.01-fold and 1.10-fold, respectively (p < 0.05). Conclusion: All patients were infected with multidrug-resistant A. baumannii. The plasma procalcitonin and serum sodium levels are independent predictors of A. baumannii infection in patients with severe burns.
