Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program in kidney transplant recipients. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 140 patients who underwent kidney transplantation within an ERAS program between August 2023 and July 2025 at the Department of Urology, Cho Ray Hospital. Results: The preoperative fasting time was 6.6 ± 0.9 hours; preoperative carbohydrate loading time was 3.9 ± 0.7 hours; time to early oral intake was 5.6 ± 0.8 hours; time to first ambulation after surgery was 17.5 ± 1.4 hours. Catheter indwelling time and indwelling time of drainage 5.1 ± 0.4 days - 3.8 ± 0.7 days. The incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting was 20.7%. Postoperative pain scores assessed by the Visual Analog Scale decreased from 4.9/10 at 6 hours to 2.3/10 at 24 hours. Post-transplant renal function (creatinine) was 1.07 ± 0.38mg/dL, eGFR was 80.73 ± 21.5 mL/min/1.73m2. The length of hospital stay was 6.7 ± 0.8 days. Conclusion: The ERAS program in kidney transplant recipients facilitated faster postoperative recovery and shortened the length of hospital stay. These findings represent clinically meaningful data and provide additional evidence to support nursing practice in implementing patient care protocols that have not yet been widely adopted across transplant centers.
