Abstract

Objectives: To identify null geneotypes of the GSTT1 and GSTM1 gene and  analyze their associations with several hematological parameters in patients with occupational TNT poisoning. Methods: A case-control and descriptive study was conducted on 200 workers (100 patients with occupational TNT poisoning, 100 non poisoned controls from December 2023 to December 2025, at Military Hospital 103. Results: The average age of the patient group was 45.67 ± 4.98, compared to 45.82 ± 4.98 in the control group. The mean duration of occupational exposure was 23.53 ± 6.07, compared to 23.44 ± 4.64 in the control group. The male/female ratio was 65/35 in the patient group and 71/29 in the control group. White blood cell count (WBC), lymphocyte (L) count, red blood cell count (RBC), and hemoglobin (Hb) were lower in the patient group compared to the control group. The GSTT1 null/non-null gene variant was 44/56 in the patient group and 46/54 in the control group; the GSTM1 null/non-null variant was 69/31 in the patient group and 77/23 in the control group. Conclusion: Patients with TNT poisoning exhibited a reduction in red blood cell and peripheral white blood cell counts. No significant differences were observed in the distribution of GSTT1 and GSTM1 null genotypes between the two groups. However, red blood cell counts and hemoglobin (Hb) levels in GSTM1 null carriers within the patient group were significantly lower than those in the control group (p < 0.05), suggesting a correlation between the GSTM1 null genotype and hematological alterations.
