Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the early outcomes of totally extraperitoneal (TEP) laparoscopic repair for the treatment of inguinal hernia using mesh and identify associated factors. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 86 patients who underwent TEP laparoscopic repair, from January 2024 to September 2025 at Can Tho General Hospital. Results: The mean age was 44.9 ± 12.4 years; males accounted for 96.5%; unilateral hernia was observed in 91.9% of cases. The mean operative time was 54.6 ± 11.3 minutes; the complication rate was 16.3%; and the mean length of hospital stay was 2.6 ± 1.3 days. The proportion of patients with good quality of life (QoL) was 93.0%, while 7.0% had suboptimal QoL. Factors associated with suboptimal QoL included the presence of comorbidities (p < 0.05), bilateral hernia, a history of previous inguinal surgery, and recovery time of > 48 hours (p < 0.01). Conclusion: TEP laparoscopic repair for inguinal hernia is safe and effective. Long-term outcomes, including postoperative QoL, should be further evaluated.
