Abstract

Objectives: To assess the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and associated factors in patients with severe burns. Methods: A longitudinal prospective descriptive study was conducted on 88 patients (aged ≥ 18 years) with severe burns admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, Le Huu Trac National Burn Hospital, from March 2023 to February 2025. Results: The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency at hospital admission was 71.6%, including 38.6% with severe deficiency. The prevalence increased markedly on day 7 (88%) and remained persistently high on day 28 post-burn (85.4%). Serum 25(OH)D levels at admission were negatively correlated with total burn surface area (rho = -0.32; p = 0.002), deep burn surface area (rho = -0.45; p = 0.001), while showing positive correlations with serum albumin levels (rho = 0.41; p = 0.001) and total protein levels (rho = 0.37; p = 0.001). Deep burn surface area was independently associated with serum 25(OH)D levels at admission (β = -0.27; p = 0.04). Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency was highly prevalent in patients with severe burns at hospital admission and persisted throughout the post-burn period. Deep burn surface area was independently associated with serum 25(OH)D  levels at admission.
