Abstract

ABSTRACT

EFFECTIVENESS OF PULSE ULTRASOUND THERAPY

IN THE TREATMENT OF CHRONIC PLANTAR FASCIITIS

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of pulsed ultrasound therapy in the treatment of chronic plantar fasciitis.

Methods: A randomized controlled intervention study (RCT) was conducted on 59 patients diagnosed with unilateral chronic plantar fasciitis and divided into 2 groups. The intervention group of 29 patients was given with pulsed ultrasound therapy combined with static stretching for 4 weeks. The control group of 30 patients was given with stretching method 5 times a week for 4 weeks. Both groups were evaluated for VAS pain score, plantar fascia thickness on ultrasound and foot function index (FFI) score at admission and follow up 4 weeks. The data were analyzed and processed using statistical algorithms and the proposed statistical significance level was 5%.

Results: Mean difference (0-4) weeks: VAS pain scores were 6.6 ± 1.0 and 3.4 ± 1.4 respectively for the intervention group; 6.5 ± 1.0 and 6.2 ± 1.6 respectively for the control group. Plantar fascia thickness was 4.9 ± 0.6 and 4.1 ± 0.6 respectively for the intervention group; 5.0 ± 0.6 and 4.9 ± 0.7 respectively for the control group. FFI scores were 73.23 ± 4.71 and 34.25 ± 4.41 respectively for the intervention group; 72.81 ± 4.81 and 71.35 ± 11.13 respectively for the control group.

Conclusion: High-dose pulsed ultrasound therapy performed before stretching is effective in rapidly reducing pain and improving foot function in the treatment of chronic plantar fasciitis.

Keywords: Pulsed ultrasound therapy, chronic plantar fasciitis.
