Assessing the relationship between the prevalence of serum hypoalbuminemia and the clinical characteristics of cardiovascular patients
Main Article Content
Abstract
Introduction: Hypoalbuminemia is a strong prognostic indicator in the general population and in various pathological conditions. The phenomenon of low serum albumin can be considered a modifiable risk factor in patients with certain cardiovascular diseases. This study aims to provide a more detailed insight into the prevalence of abnormal serum albumin levels, as well as additional evidence assessing the impact of cardiovascular risk factors on patients, contributing to improved diagnosis and prognosis in cardiovascular diseases.
Objective: To determine the prevalence of serum hypoalbuminemia and its association with cardiovascular risk factors in patients treated at Military Hospital 7A.
Subjects and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 276 cardiovascular patients who visited and received treatment at Military Hospital 7A from January 2023 to September 2023.
Results: The prevalence of patients with serum hypoalbuminemia was 79.0%. Among them, patients with coronary artery disease had a hypoalbuminemia rate of 7.8%, while patients with hypertension showed a rate of 95.4%. The prevalence of hypoalbuminemia in heart failure patients was 28.0%. All patients with valvular heart disease and cardiomyopathy exhibited hypoalbuminemia. The study identified a statistically significant association (p < 0.05) between residency, treatment area, BMI, blood pressure, RBC, HGB, and total protein levels with the prevalence of serum hypoalbuminemia.
Conclusion: Serum hypoalbuminemia serves as a warning sign for physicians regarding the patient's health status, necessitating closer monitoring, especially in cardiovascular conditions. Therefore, serum albumin testing is essential to provide further evidence for treating physicians.
