A MODIFIED LATERAL PHARYNGOTOMY APPROACH IN OROPHARYNGEAL CANCER SURGERY

Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of the lateral pharyngotomy (LA) approach and the status and initial outcomes of oropharyngeal cancer surgery via cervical approach. Methods: A case series study was conducted on 10 patients with oropharyngeal cancer who were treated using the LA approach at the Department of Head and Neck Surgery - Otorhinolaryngology, Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital between January 2021 and February 2025. Results: Patients underwent wide surgical resection of the oropharyngeal tumor and invasive tissue with or without immediate reconstruction using a musculocutaneous flap. All patients experienced no severe postoperative complications, achieved good recovery of swallowing function after surgery, and showed no recurrence. Conclusion: Oropharyngeal cancer surgery using the LP approach can be used to achieve good functional outcomes while ensuring radical resection in patients with advanced or recurrent oropharyngeal cancer.
