Subjects and methods: This prospective study included 89 cases with proximal fractures of the femur in whom locking plate fixation, or bipolar head arthroplasty was performed between April 2020 and January 2021 at the Orthopedic and Trauma Center, Military Hospital 103. Results: The median age of all patients was 76.42 years (range, 60 - 93 years). The number of proximal femoral fractures that occurred in females (61.8%) was more than in males (38.2%), with p < 0.001. The average surgical delay was 6.39 ± 4.18 days. The mean hospital stay time was 10.58 ± 5.622. There were (6.7%) deaths at the twelve-month follow-up, 14 (15.7%) with complications. The Barthel index score at 12 months was less than prior to fracture (90.42 vs. 98.49 points) (p < 0.001). The number of patients who have recovered from complications was less than those without complications (75% and 94%, respectively, p < 0.001). Recovery rate in the age groups 60 - 69 was reported as 98.6% and 71.61% over 90 years of age Conclusion: The Barthel index is a good tool to evaluate the physical recovery of pre-fracture condition and allows for the assessment of the functional recovery after one-year follow-up.
